A birdhouse made for Dwellings, an exhibition at South London Gallery & later The Design Museum, curated by Computer Room. The birdhouse acts as a talisman, intended to protect the user. In astrological magic talisman's have been compared to birdhouses - precious objects built as places for spirits to reside. In this instance the spirit is the bird, invited to take shelter in the dwelling, which acts as a bridge in our ecosystem between their realm and ours. The form is hand carved from British elm to loosely imitate the ancient forms of female fertility figurines, the curves representing motherhood and abundance. A hand-moulded cast bronze egg embedded into the structure acts as a talismanic gemstone, symbolising fertility and new beginnings.
